Advent 2011

Posted on Sun, Dec 5, 2010

Advent begins on Sunday, November 27, this year. Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. It is observed as a season of prayer and repentance followed by anticipation, hope, and joy. We can celebrate Advent by thanking God for Christ’s first coming to Earth as a baby, and for His presence among us today through the Holy Spirit, and in preparation and anticipation of His final coming at the end of time.

The colors for the advent candles are normally purple, pink, and white. The purple candle symbolizes repentance and fasting. Purple is also the color of royalty, demonstrating the anticipation and reception of the coming King celebrated during Advent. Pink candles represent joy, or rejoicing, and reveals a shift in the season away from repentance and toward celebration. White is the color of the center Advent candle representing purity. Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. Also, those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made “whiter than snow.”

First Baptist Church observes the season of Advent with a wreath containing candles with these colors. A new candle is lite each Sunday in Advent then on Christmas Eve a very meaningful, candle-light service is held usually at 7:00 pm. So mark your calendar for 7:00 pm Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, 2011.
